EcoSolar and Hutt Gas and Plumbing installed the solar water heating system serving the Teaching and Research Building on the Victoria University Campus in Kelburn, Wellington. The solar water heating system is a preheat system incorporating; 15 x EcoSolar 2.8ST solar collectors mounted flat on to the roof in a layout which optimises the building's aesthetics, the collectors heat the water within the 2 x 600 litre preheat cylinders located within the plantroom under the roof. The solar preheated water then passes into 2 x 330 litre reheat cylinders located adjacent to the preheat cylinders. A boiler is used to heat the water within the reheat cylidners, a heat recovery system on the boiler also provides preheating of the domestic hot water. The solar system operates as a drainback system, effectively managing the risks associated with frosts and overheating. A full monitoring and data logging system is installed utilising the Energy Conscious Design Solar Monitor, see the annimation for live system operation and graphs of historical data logging. There is a screen within the University displaying the Solar Monitor live annimation, this educationsal tool maximises the benefits from incorporating energy effeiciency in to a building by incorporating the technologies into the sylabus. Educating the next generation about energy efficiency and providing real life examples and thier relative performance.
